Contrary to popular opinion, Yallingup does not mean “Place Of Love”. I’ve presented a few wedding ceremonies in Yallingup, where Josh Whiteland (Koomal Dreaming) has conducted a Welcome to Country for the guests. According to Josh, Yallingup means Place of Caves.
But for the romantic amongst us, it’s easy to understand why the general perception is that it’s a “Place of Love” — because it’s so ridiculously beautiful one can’t help but feel all loved up once there!
Yallingup is a stunning seaside town west of Dunsborough, overlooking the Indian Ocean. It is known for it’s surf, lagoon beach, limestone caves, nearby stunning coastline (think Canal Rocks, Smiths Beach), vineyards, wineries, breweries, and natural areas of interest such as the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
I have lost count of the number of weddings I’ve done in Yallingup, but without exception, all of them have left me with a smile on my face.
My very first wedding there was on the lawn overlooking the Yallingup lagoon, where the groom created the aisle using white pebbles. Turns out, they were the same pebbles he’d used to spell out “Will you marry me?” in his backyard the year before.
Not long after that wedding, I climbed to the top of the nearby Canal Rocks with a couple and their two witnesses. I married them at the top of the rocks, the wind whipping our hair and putting an exhilarating “this is living!” feeling in our lungs. The location gave the ceremony some awesome “I’m the king of the woooooorld!” feels.
What is it about Canal Rocks that brings out the adventurous side? At the top of this page you’ll see a happy snap of a pirate wedding I did one Halloween afternoon. There was arghgghh instead of I Do, and tailor-written vows involving Davey Jones’ locker. I’ve uploaded a PIRATE WEDDING SCRIPT if you want inspiration for your own pirate wedding! No one can say this Celebrant Yallingup doesn’t go above and beyond to ensure her couples get the ceremony they dream of — this, I promise you, until there are no horizons left to chase and all the rum is gone.
And then there was the time I married a couple on Smiths Beach, in a ceremony which involved their daughter. It was the first set of parents I’d married who were both biological parents to the children — up until this wedding, all my weddings involving children were the creation of a blended family. Wow how times have changed, since those days where nuclear families were the norm. What a kaleidoscopic melting pot of a world we are living in now!
All the weddings I’ve done in the gardens of Caves House? Every one of them special, but I do recall one particular elopement I did there, where the owner of the hotel came along to act as a witness. Oh, and the elopement where the bride’s scarlet red cape stood out amongst the lush greenery of the garden — there was no missing her!
And did you know, there’s a scarp in the hills above Dunsborough that offers 180 degree views of Dunsborough and Geographe Bay? It’s a hidden gem of a place, but not recommended for those with elderly guests, or guests with mobility issues — there’s a bit of rock scrambling required to get to the top!
I haven’t mentioned any of the venues, retreats and wineries — there are just so many to choose from! Have a gander through Coast to Country Weddings list of Yallingup wedding venues and you’ll see what I mean!
