I have been a Celebrant Margaret River region since 2008, and in that time have seen the depth and breadth of the best wedding venues the region has to offer.

It could be argued that I’ve seen more of this region than my husband, who is a born-and-bred Cowaramupian! (Cowaramuppet?)

It is my pleasure to share some of my experiences with you here, in the hope that you’ll consider Margaret River for your wedding ceremony.

The Margaret River region is has built a reputation around the world for its amazing wine, food, beaches, forest, pristine nature, hiking trails, cycling trails, caves, art and adventure. It’s located in Australia’s south-west, around three hours south of Perth, and “is bounded to the east by the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, and to the west by the Indian Ocean.” (source: Wikipedia)

All of these offerings has put the region in the position where it is now building a reputation as a destination wedding location — and why not? It’s the perfect location to bring guests for a week-long celebration. I guarantee they will not run out of things to do in Margaret River!

One of my all-out favourite wedding ceremony locations is the Boranup Forest, just 15 minute drive from the Margaret River township. Every forest wedding I have conducted there has been nothing sort of magical.

Boranup is a Wadandi word that means “meeting place”. The forest is made up of the Karri tree — the third-tallest tree in the world — which can grow to 60m in height.

If I had to sum up the forest in one word it would be STUNNING. It has great energy, is spectacularly beautiful, and is most definitely a “happy place” to wander into.

Then we have the huge range of beaches to choose from for your beach wedding.

From:

  • epic surf beaches such as Redgate, Surfers Point and Cowaramup Bay, to
  • secret little quiet beaches such as (another section of) Redgate, Meelup and Old Dunsborough, to
  • scenic overload beaches such as Canal Rocks, Redgate (again!), Hamelin Bay and Gnarabup Beach (you can have your reception there too, with Barefoot Beach Weddings, FYI!)

… there is a beach and a time-of-day to suit everyone.

A tip for a beach wedding in Margaret River… Choose your time of day wisely. The wind generally comes up in the afternoon, which could make for a gusty wedding. The advantage of course is that any wind blows away any flies, but if you have a hairstyle that you want to preserve, perhaps consider a morning wedding.

As for the incredible range of winery wedding venues to choose from… Where do I start?! Rather than re-create the wheel, I’m going to send you on over to Coast to Country’s winery weddings page. Settle in with a cuppa — there’s a lot to choose from! You can go high-end and luxury, to family-run and more relaxed, to exclusive and intimate, to quintessential Margaret River, to kid-friendly brewery-winery combinations… Have fun choosing!

Feeling adventurous? I once married a couple in an airplane while flying over the Margaret River region. The pilot flew them over the vineyards around Cowaramup, following the Wilyabrup creek to the beach, then back south towards the Margaret River township. The couple wore headphones to exchange their vows as we flew over the river mouth. We called it the Mile High Wedding!

The light in Margaret River is gorgeous — a photographer’s dream. In summer, farm weddings are popular due to the golden light that can be achieved with the sun reflecting off the dried hay paddocks. (See below for this cracker from Aimee Claire!)
